Cagayan de Oro is the largest city in Northern Mindanao and the main gateway to the region, but what puts it on travellers’ radar is a single experience: the Cagayan de Oro River. The rapids here — 21 sets across an 8-kilometre run — are among the most accessible whitewater rafting in the Philippines, and they’re genuinely good. Class 3 on a normal day, Class 4–5 after heavy rain, running through a gorge of volcanic rock with the city visible in the background. You can do it on the afternoon you arrive.
Getting to Cagayan de Oro
Cagayan de Oro is served by Laguindingan Airport (CGY), about 45 minutes from the city centre. Cebu Pacific, AirAsia and Philippine Airlines all fly direct from Manila (1.5 hours) and Cebu (30 minutes), with connections to several other Mindanao cities. By sea, 2GO Travel and Sulpicio Lines run overnight ferries from Manila and Cebu — practical for travellers combining CDO with northern or eastern Mindanao.
Whitewater Rafting
The main activity and the reason most visitors come. The CDO River rafting run is 8–9km, takes 1.5–2 hours on the water, and passes through Class 2–4 rapids (names include the Cobra, Washing Machine, and the Bus Stop). Multiple operators run daily trips from their camps just outside the city: CDO Bugsay River Camp, Great White Water Tours, Kagay-an Adventure Camp and others. Expect to pay ₱750–1,200 per person for the standard half-day package including guide, equipment, and safety briefing. No experience required — guides are skilled and the ratio is usually 5–6 people per raft. First-timers are very well looked after.
For the full experience, go after significant rainfall when the river is higher and faster. Check with operators — some will tell you honestly when conditions are better. The best Class 4 stretch involves a genuine waterfall drop (the Washing Machine) that will get everyone very wet.
Mapawa Nature Park
About 25km south of CDO, Mapawa is a privately managed ecotourism property with one of the best adventure activity lineups in Mindanao: a 700-metre zipline through forest canopy, rappelling down a waterfall, ATV trails, a hanging bridge over a gorge, and a natural pool at the base of a cascade. The scale and quality here are significantly above what you find at most Philippine eco-parks — the zipline especially is long and fast enough to be genuinely exciting. Day packages run ₱1,500–2,500 per person depending on which activities you include.
Del Monte Philippines Plantation
The Del Monte pineapple plantation in Bukidnon, about 90 minutes south of CDO, is one of the largest in the world and offers guided tours of the growing, harvesting and processing operations. It’s an unusual day trip — industrial-scale agriculture in a highland landscape — but interesting for the sheer scale of it. The plantation store sells fresh pineapples, juice, and products you won’t find elsewhere. Book the tour in advance.
Food and Markets
CDO has a strong Mindanaoan food culture. The Night Market along Divisoria in the centre is the best place to eat cheaply and well — grilled pork, lechon manok, various inihaw on sticks, fresh fruit. For sit-down restaurants, the Limketkai area has most of the mid-range options. CDO is known for sweet corn, bukayo (caramelised coconut), and kinilaw (fresh fish ceviche).
Macahambus Cave and Gorge
A historical site within CDO city limits — a limestone cave and gorge where Filipino resistance fighters held off Spanish forces in 1900. Short walk through the gorge, guided tour of the cave (bring a light). Free to enter. It’s a 15-minute tricycle ride from the city centre and adds easy historical context to the trip.
Best Time to Visit
CDO and Bukidnon have two distinct seasons, but because CDO sits on the northern coast of Mindanao, rainfall is more spread out year-round than in the Visayas. The river is raftable all year; the wet season (June–October) actually produces better rafting conditions due to higher water levels. For general travel comfort, November to May is drier and more predictable.
Where to Stay
Most accommodation is in the Limketkai and Divisoria areas near the CBD. Budget: Travellers Inn, Centrio Dome Hotel. Mid-range: Xavier Estates Suites, Mallberry Suites. Upper mid-range: Seda Centrio (the best-positioned city hotel, directly connected to a mall). Most rafting operators also have basic camp accommodation near the river — worth considering if you’re going early the next morning.
